Exhibition “Knowledge Cities – Libraries in Africa”

Making Of

This exhibition is the result of a student based project seminar during 2007/08 at Humboldt-University Berlin. Starting off from the seminar "Cities in Africa" dealing with latest developments in Urbanization and Globalization in Africa, the makers of this exhibition  decided to tear down the image of the "ideal city" and to draw a landscape of knowledge: libraries as urban access points to knowledge and development.

The makers of the exhibition are:
  • Robert Liebscher, Tobias Mörike & Brigitte Krause

Brigitte Krause, student of Library and Information Science and African Studies, Robert Liebscher, student of Modern History and African Studies and Tobias Mörike, student of African and Middle Eastern Studies. Coming from different scientific backgrounds we joined together with a common interest in African issues.

We wanted to present an open and easily accessible exhibition about libraries in Africa including a wide set of examples from various regions and cities. Moreover we aimed to show information about library systems and the historical development of the pre-colonial, colonial and postcolonial times.

For the presentation of these huge topics we chose a special design. We decided to give the exhibition the character of a library and displayed the posters of the exhibition in empty bookshelves, showing the ambivalences of lacking access to information and the richness and creativity of information management on the African continent.

The textual contents of the posters can be seen here: (PDF GERMAN) | (PDF ENGLISCH).
